Oy vey! Keeping kosher and being on keto is hard!

Hello! I've decided to create this blog for all you like myself who are on or interested in the ketogenic diet while keeping kosher. This blog will have recipes that are both keto and kosher friendly. It was hard initially to do this diet because every website said pepperoni and cheese are the best foods to eat, add hollandaise sauce to everything (including meat), or eat bacon. With that being said I did a lot of modifications to recipes to make them both keto and kosher friendly. I am excited to share my kosher keto recipes with all of you! If you have recipes of your own feel free to share!

A little bit about me:
My name is Ashley. I live with my husband (who also is on the keto diet) in New Jersey, with our miniature doxie Nathan, bearded dragon Floyd, hedgehog Clyde, and our beta fish Cecil. My husband and I started the keto diet in October 2012. We have found great success with this diet. I lost 65lbs and he lost 55lbs within a year. We started Weight Watchers and did not find success at all. We actually gained! Now we are on our second round of keto. Hopefully when we hit our goal weight we will be able to find a happy medium with eating normally but healthy with exercise without having to be on a diet.

The first picture was taken on August 19th, 2012 on our wedding day. We started keto on October 5th, 2012. The bottom picture was taken in May 2013. So far all of the weight loss was strictly diet and no exercise.

Summary of Keto:

  • Eat: meat (fish, beef, poultry), eggs, high fat dairy, leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower etc., avacado, nuts, seeds, berries
  • Don't Eat: grains (including rice and corn), sugar (including fructose), starches (most root veggies).
  • If you're unsure, look it up and use some method to track what you eat
  • If your goal is weight loss, carbs will be counter productive in the long run. What you eat is up to you, we can't stop you. Through 2 years of being here, the most success has come from those who have stuck with it and not allowed cheats.
We have the keto calculator to help you set your goals. A lot of Ketopians use My Fitness Pal to keep track of what they're eating (Tip: get a food scale, log your food before you eat it to keep from surprises). It's not necessary, but it does help you be aware of what you're eating. Keto isn't magic - if you're getting all your energy from food there is no need for your body to burn stored fat. If you put food in your mouth for any reason other than being hungry, keeping track will be beneficial, even if you only do it for the first month. Having a food log also gives us something to look at if you need help or trouble shooting.
Do a lot of reading. Read through the links in the side bar (especially the Wiki and Keto in a Nutshell), read through things that are linked and threads. Educate yourself so you understand why keto works, and how it works, so you can make adjustments to make it work for you.
